You identify it by width (typically 48 inches or 60 inches), by whether it’s perforated or solid, and by the facing: single-sided foil means it installs against the rafter with foil facing the attic air space, while double-sided goes up between rafters with air gaps on both sides.

The compatibility gotcha most Los Angeles homeowners run into: if your house was built before 1978 and the attic has skip sheathing or spaced roof decking, you need the perforated version.   • Upstairs rooms run 8 to 12 degrees hotter than downstairs. This is the classic first symptom. Radiant barrier reflects heat before it ever reaches your insulation. When it fails, your insulation suddenly has to fight the full brunt of the sun on the roof deck, and it loses that fight by mid-afternoon.
  • You find foil in the insulation when you go looking. GreenFiber radiant barrier is stapled to rafters, but in attics where roof decking shifts seasonally, those staples work loose.
